To the Start of the Perm

After a hearty breakfast at Waffle House -- the first of the trip and Fran's first lifetime -- we went into battle with US 17 again. 

Temperatures were near 40F at the start, and we expected a short day, so we lingered over breakfast till things warmed up. 

The first challenge US17 threw at us was a gigantic cable stayed bridge entering downtown Brunswick. The next challenge was 6 miles of road construction on 17 that erased what little shoulder we had been using. It was exhausting, dealing with the traffic and the road surface. 

Eventually the route  departed from US 17 onto a quiet road -- one of those typical rural roads in the south, lined with tall pines and huge live oaks dripping with Spanish Moss. We enjoyed several miles of peace till the route put us back onto GA 99. 

We decided to lay up at only 45 miles as the options at mile 60-70 ( our usual range) seemed nil. At 45 the route passed an I-95 interchange with several chain motels. Oddly it took three tries before we could book a room. All the hotels here in Townsend seem to be owned by related Indian families. The first had no good rooms, but told us the other hotels were even worse. His information seemed suspect so we tried another place. Their computer was broken and they were unacquainted with pencil and paper room booking technology. So we tried another place. Three's the charm and were able to provide a decent room. Curiously, we felt like the only actual guests. Initially we were a little confused about our room number and as we blundered around we were redirected by a man in a turban chasing us down: "No, don't go that way. No!"   I ended up terrifying a cute gray cat and was terrified in turn by a three legged bald dog that seemed straight out of a David Lynch movie.
