Some clever shortcuts, some on dirt roads (really sand roads) cut the anticipated 80 miles to a more manageable sixty something miles. Really a great day of riding. Favorable winds all day, and almost all quiet back roads through a very rural area of SC. 

We found a sand road that paralleled US `17 and cut off more than 15 miles of the "official" US 17 bypass. Threading through the forest once inhabited by the renowed military innovator Francis "Swamp Fox" Marion of revolutionary war fame, we passed by quaint churches, camps, and vast wetlands. 

Other bypasses took us by some more plantations -- so impressive with their corridors of live oaks dripping with Spanish Moss. 

On another US 17 bypass we rode through a forest fire. Not raging, but still actively burning with some open flames, we could feel the warmth from the scorched earth.
