Debrief : a fab event from both the social and more serious angles, essentially a lot of time to chat and ride, stop at the feeds and then a timed section up the climb to the very top of the highest peak (1500m). There was about 300 riders on the start line, and the ride out to the lakes at the foot of the climb passed by quickly. The climb is unique, the photos are breathtaking, as is the nearly 9% gradient for 6km. What made it more interesting today was the constant head and tailwind between the changing directions on the switchbacks. Having only been on the island for 24h I felt the negative effects of the heat and being above 1000m very quickly. Initially my power was good but then I soon found myself having to be weary about riding above threshold. My 380-390w for 20min would not be happening up at this altitude, not without prior prep anyway. Nevertheless, a brill day out, wonderfully organised and controlled and a chance to say you have done something that not many people have. Plus, you can see this climb from the airplane on a good day!
