Some analysis from Race Across Italy

After a week of easy recovery rides I find the time to sum the race:

My expectations were simple: Perform on a solid level, try to be the fastest in the unsupported category, which is not easy when racing with Justinas Leveika, Jochen Böhringer and Daniele Rellini – and not losing too much time over the supported category. If everything goes well, I hoped for a time under 28 hours.

My setup was lighter than it seemed on the pictures. I only carried food and drinks, a small mini tool and a spare tube with cartridge, together with a thermal jersey and a jacket. This clothing takes quite some space, so I had the Apidura frame bag and the top-tube bag.

Because of the bag-drop rule I had an extra tube, a USB powerbank and more food with Ensure liquid nutrition, Peeroton bars and gels and full bottles with my carbo-electrolyte drink at every Checkpoint. I also gave away the warm clothes from the first night at a CP and grabbed another set of longsleeves on the last CP.

My power output was steady, I was starting quite easy but held my power for a long time. In the beginning most racers were faster, but they then slowed down, whereas I could overtake one after the other. When I catched Justinas, who was the leader until Halfwaypoint, I got an extra motivation and could build a solid lead before the last CP. In the second night I also slowed down a bit, because I got tired, had to fight against sleep and decided to save some energy for the upcoming Race Across Austria.

My stoppage time was 50min, caused by a flat tire and one unsuccessful refuel stop, when I was looking for an open shop for quite some time, before I found a Pub with some crackers and chocolate cake.

Overall about 230 watts NP

Food intake: 11000kcal with 2000g of carbs
Temperatures from -1°C to 36°C made the race very challenging, even if we had dry weather.

I finished with 27:43h and was never expecting to get overall winner in front of the supported racers. Unfortunately Daniel Steinhauser and Ralph Diseviscourt had to DNF. They would have been crazy fast.
It was a great event and I can recommend RAI to everybody!
