poor Brad is a trooper for putting up with me today. frustrating week and needed to get some sort of release from a nice hard effort. best part of the ride was rolling Panoramic, though shit went south when we turned onto Tam as we were in a cloud the whole time with zero viz, water spitting into you face off the rear wheel and every front shift resulting in a dumped chain. probably also didn't help that i paced for a 40 minute effort and so was kind of already at my limit, but some combination of those things caused me to need to pull the plug. unfortunately, the "fun" parts of the ride only started there

descending in the cloud was awful as we were drenched and freezing and riding our brakes the whole way (also got pelted with hail which narrowly missed blinding me...), but i also noticed pretty bad brake rub. when we got to the bottom (and started to thaw out) i found out that something is wrong with my brakes (they were just rebled/calipers cleaned/given new pads on Thursday) such that braking became a somewhat binary endeavor - the calipers stopped retracting on their own completely so each time you brake you basically come to a hard stop (no feathering the brakes and coasting) until you manage to manually push the levers back into position (which if youre unlucky sometimes also results in a shift at zero speed, which is exactly what you want)

it turns out... this is super unsafe. you basically need to relearn all your braking habits and also have a lot of trouble with on-the-fly braking because of the whole "your bike just stops moving the second you touch the brakes even once" thing. nothing like not really having functioning brakes while navigating clueless tourists on a extremely sketchily gusty GGB on the way home

kind of a bummer. with better weather and a functioning bicycle this could have been an awesome ride, but sadly it ended up somewhat nightmarish. body felt good though, and the power for the 40 minutes was actually pretty solid, and riding with Bradley is always a pleasure, so i think theres at least some positive takeaways, though hoping for some better luck in the future
