Ouch! So a trail runner shows up to a road race…
This summer into fall season had its ups and downs. Built up to my highest mileage of the year only to have an injury flare up. Built back up again, then wrecked my ankle on a trail run two weeks out from my goal race. Ankle still isn’t 100% but it feels fine on flat surfaces so I made the call to skip the trail race and signed up for a marathon on a whim. It felt strange and yet very familiar to be back in a road marathon for the first time since 2020. Went out relaxed and found my rhythm for the first 18 miles, then the sufferfest began and I did what I always do, held on for dear life and tried not to let the wheels come off completely before the finish line. I figured I’d either be sub 2:30 or over 2:50 today, ended up at 2:33:01. I’ll take it. Kinda makes me wonder what I could do if trained for one.
