Part 2 outdoors, rounding out a hundred miles today at 200w.

A little anecdotal experience I thought I'd share with you all. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of this week, I was doing some intermittent fasting and carb restriction to drop some quick weight (148 lbs on Friday morning). During Wednesday's training session, I trained fasted with a few bottles of LMNT (salt), and at two hours, I bonked hard. I pushed through my prescribed training session and finished what should have been a relatively simple 2.5-hour Z2 session. As soon as I got off the bike, I could feel I was experiencing hypoglycemia, and immediately tested my blood sugar. No surprise, it was at 59 mg/dL. I felt terrible, and it took hours to recover and feel back to normal.

Today, I fueled appropriately for the type of training I was doing. I had 90 carbs from Cream of Wheat and maple syrup about two hours before riding. I rode for about five hours total and took in around 300g of carbs on the bike. I felt strong the entire time, pushing for and snagging a KOM against the wind as I crossed the hundred-mile mark.

For those who know me, you know I’m generally low-carb off the bike and have been for many years, but when it comes to fueling endurance activities, there’s no question: your body performs better with sugar in its system. The difference in energy and endurance is remarkable. Pair that with intentional caffeine (took in 300 mg), and it's incredible.
