Sort of embarrassing to be so speed-inept in front of my former coaches and a few teammates, I thought I could approach the 15-min barrier...came thru the Mile in 4:50, right on pace, in the back of the “train” like I planned...came thru 3k in 9:14 I think, which I’m happy with, but the last 2k got me good...I think if I ever want to run 14:30 or near 14 flat for 5k, I’ll need to set aside an actual large block of specific training and not rely on past workouts from years ago and my current trail/climbing/endurance fitness...all in all, I signed up for this thing because I love GV’s school and campus and program and coach Baltes (NP grad, too) and their facilities are world-class...my former universities both come to this meet as well, and I want to impress Coach Hillyard and Coach Straubel and let them know that they weren’t fools for taking a chance on me and giving me any money to run in college...I have great respect for Coach Hillyard especially...plus, leg speed is good for ultras and trail races, and I never want to lose touch with what I have...I love going out of my comfort zone and spiking up with the young guns...I will be back GV, and I really think I can eventually be seeded in the fast heat and approach 14 flat with a group of guys, time will tell. Chuckanut 50k in 5 weeks, mileage is rising, climbing is rising, and I want to bust it.
