BQ 2026: a measly -0:47, not an improvement over the already precarious -4:24 at CIM 2024 😔

The affirmation-seeking runner might have their name on their bib so spectators call for them.  The truly vain dress as a pop singer to hear the cheers for the voice of a generation.  Unfortunately, I think my makeup held up better than the rest of my body.

I had two FindMyMarathon.com Conservative Start, Even Effort wristbands, one to be under 3:10 and another to beat my 3:14 time from two years ago.  In a regrettable decision, I started tracking to the fast one even though I typically take a while to get up to speed.  After 4 miles, I knew 3:10 was a bit too hot, but it's as if the train was already out of control going downhill.  I tried to back off, especially in the Newton hills, but apparently it wasn't enough.  

No one body part was to blame, as it was more everything degrading more or less evenly.  Once even a course PR and not improving on CIM went out the window, I found myself disengaging.  In the final mile or two, I even walked some portions, nearly unheard of.  I'll live and learn.  The gamble was a conscious decision, and I should've adjusted more severely.

It wasn't all bad.  I got "Go, Chappell" throughout the day as well as many quizzical looks. 😄 How dare anyone not take such a prestigious race so seriously!  A lifetime highlight was going through the Wellesley Scream Tunnel as Chappell.  The young women, some of whom had tiaras too, certainly got it, and I'll remember those fleeting minutes for the rest of my life.  My right arm was yanked back many times from all the high fives.

A pleasant surprise was seeing Katie Burns Kays at the 10K mark when I was still in reasonable spirits.  I called Kimee Howley afterwards and don't even remember what I said, but I appreciate her support in Pink Pony Run Club.
