5-15-30 Sprint Workout + Endurance

Really didn't know what to expect today with how I have been feeling and the rain this morning. Goal was to stay with the lead group as long as possible, and maybe break away on one of the steeper climbs. The lead group of 10 or 12 riders went out pretty hot but I did my best to stay towards the front for the first 10 miles. The eventual winner made a solo break early and it was clear that no one would be catching him. After 40 minutes I was actually afraid I was about to get dropped, but once we hit the juniper swamp climb around mile 13 (the steepest of the day) I gave it a pretty hard effort to see who could hang, and was surprised to see no one else at the top with me, and still pretty far back. Guess if you are hurting then everyone else might be too. I decided to take off solo with the hopes of maybe catching the guy in first. Rode alone for a bit but was eventually joined by Dan, the rider in 3rd, when I made a wrong turn at an intersection. We knew there was no way we would catch the guy in first and saw we had a decent gap on the others, so we decided to work together and rode the last 30ish miles by ourselves, moving at a steady but manageable clip. The chasing group was in sight at one point but only briefly, and we didn't see anyone else in the last 20 miles. We ended with a friendly sprint. Rained steady for the first half of the race but thankfully it wasn't too cold or windy. Just a little chilly on the longer descents. Happy to have the 44m knobbies on the dirt sectors. Don't think they slowed me down any on the pavement either. Took a bottle of tailwind and a bottle with electrolytes and finished both by the last 10 miles, which was perfect. Didn't need to stop at the feed zones. Actually surprised by how good I felt at the finish. Working with Dan was definitely the right move and helped us both conserve a lot of energy. My goal was top 10 so I am very happy with this result, especially given how hectic things have been lately.
