Day 3 had the first castle, finally, of the Euro tour! The first castle, Burg Hohengeroldseck, ended up adding over 1000 vertical feet of climbing to reach it, but the view from the top, one of the highest points in the region, was so worth it! There's a big difference between castles that are ruins and castles that are maintained, in a few different senses. One, the ruins are very often older, but two, each one has different vibes to it. 

Also, as we were climbing to reach the castle, we pass this sign saying that, yes, the forest we're cycling through, definitely haunted. 

Castle number two, (schloss ortenberg) we didn't tour, but was, again, of the maintained variety, and not the ruined variety. After that, the route flattened out and followed a bunch of gravel farm paths and roads until we reach Strasbourg, France. That's three countries in three days, which I’d say is a pretty good ratio.

The birding along our route today was superb, with highlights including tons of storks, great blue herons, and mute swans. 

The ride finished at the hospital wine cellars-with the oldest white wine still in a barrel dating back to 1472. No tastings, unfortunately of this wine or any other others.

Strasbourg itself has proven to be a dynamic city with so much to see and do! More city exploration on tap before we leave tomorrow…
