Pre flight trail time

What a day. Short story is I didn’t feel comfortable with La Conte glacier conditions, so decided to turn back. Epic day.

Longer story. Oof. Late season conditions on Ptarmigan are no joke. Lots of high exposure stuff on bad rock and glacial ice. I’ve realized I have some PTSD from a fall last year on bad rock, which slows me down anytime I see similar conditions. That put us at La Conte 9.5 hours in. We’d heard other groups had turned back there. That combined with frayed nerves caused me to make the call to turn back for known conditions vs continuing into the unknown. I was a wreck. After starting out at 4am we made it back to the car a little after midnight. Crossing a glacier and high exposure rock in the dark is not recommended. I was so fried that I drove home 10mph below the speed limit. Driving the speed limit literally felt scary. Time for lots of type 1 trails after I recover.
