Osmý den jsem se udeřil o dno. V noci se mi z karimatky odlepila jedna záplata a já se ocitl na studené zemi. Žádné další jsem neměl. Zkusil jsem tam nalepit pár TPU záplat z Aliexpressu, co jsem měl spíš na díry v oblečení, ale nedokázaly udržet vzduch. Jedna vydržela asi dvě hodiny, než se taky odporoučela. Bez dalších možností jsem ležel na studené zemi. K mojí smůle to byla vůbec nejchladnější noc v závodě, několik stupňů pod bodem mrazu a ráno jsem měl všechno pokryté jinovatkou. I spacák.

Vstávalo se mi dost těžko. Studená noc mě tak psychicky nalomila, že jsem nebyl schopný vstát. Jen jsem tam ležel a poslouchal, jak kolem mě projíždí cyklisti. Zkusil jsem karimatku zalepit lepidlem na duše, ale výsledek jsem chtěl vyzkoušet až další noc, abych dal lepidlu co největší prostor k zaschnutí. Pomalu jsem se vydal na jízdu nekonečným údolím.

Cítil jsem se hrozně. Ztratil jsem tu jistotu, že ať už se mi pojede jakkoliv, dobře se na konci vyspím. Nebudou noci bez karimatky moc studené? Údolí velmi lehce stoupalo, projížděl jsem nekonečnem potoků a říček a doufal jsem, že to brzo skončí. Lískooříškový krém pomáhal jen trochu.

Po devíti hodinách jsem se konečně dostal na Arabel Plateau a vystoupal na další čtyřtisícovku v závodě. Začal jsem první loop. Bohužel se zvedl silný vítr a já proti němu bojoval na roletových cestách. Byl jsem z toho otrávený, ale jel jsem až do noci…

Day eight I hit rock bottom. During the night one of the patches on my sleeping mat peeled off and I ended up lying on the cold ground. I had no spares. I tried sticking on a few TPU patches from Aliexpress, meant more for clothing holes than for mats, but they couldn’t hold air. One lasted maybe two hours before it failed too. With no other options, I lay on the frozen ground. Just my luck—it was the coldest night of the whole race, a few degrees below zero, and in the morning everything was covered in frost. Even my sleeping bag.

Getting up was really tough. That freezing night broke me mentally, I just couldn’t bring myself to rise. I just lay there, listening to other riders passing by. I tried fixing the mat with tube glue, but I wanted to test the repair only the following night, to give it maximum time to cure. Slowly, I set off into the endless valley.

I felt awful. I had lost the certainty that no matter how the day went, I would at least sleep well at the end. Wouldn’t the nights without a mat be too cold? The valley climbed ever so gently, I crossed countless streams and rivulets, and kept hoping it would end soon. Hazelnut cream helped, but only a little.

After nine hours I finally reached the Arabel Plateau and climbed yet another 4000-meter pass of the race. I started the first loop. Unfortunately, a strong wind picked up and I had to fight it on endless washboard roads. I was fed up, but I kept going late into the night…
