🇨🇿 Desátý den 🚵 Pomalu mi začalo docházet, že tenhle závod je dlouhý a ubíhající čas jsem vnímal mnohem intenzivněji. Když jsem se v noci vyzvracel, udělalo se mi lépe, ale rozhodně jsem se nevrátil k normálu. Do cíle to bylo pořád ještě 500 kilometrů a uvědomoval jsem si, že to bude bolet.

Ráno jsem do sebe dostal hotelovou snídani a vypil gazillion černého čaje. Předpověď pro ten den nebyla příznivá, ale uvědomoval jsem si, že nemám moc na výběr. Mám s sebou veškeré vybavení, abych to projel.

Nejdřív jsem musel vystoupat na Tosor Pass. V duchu si opakuju tři, osm, devět, tři a porovnávám to s aktuální nadmořskou výškou. Cesta nahoru mi trvala šest hodin. V prudších pasážích se mi točila hlava a ztrácel jsem sílu v nohách, takže jsem dost času ztrácel tlačením. Po snídani mě přešla chuť na tuhou stravu a snažil se aspoň některé kalorie doplnit přes slazené nápoje. Rozhodně jsem ale za posledních 24 hodin byl v kalorickém definicitu.

Těsně pod vrcholem jsem slyšel podivné hřmění, ze kterého se vyklubala kamenitá lavina. Někdo tam křičel – utíkej – ale nevěděl jsem kam. Ozvěnou se to šířilo úplně všude a přes hustou mlhu jsem nemohl vědět, jestli bych neutíkal do náruče laviny. Nakonec to ale utichlo.

Nahoře to nekončilo. Nečekal mě žádný sjezd dolů ani ježdění po rovince. Napojil jsem se na kozí stezku vedle řeky a tenhle můj výlet doprovázel silný vítr, déšť, kroupy a sněžení. Na blátivých stezkách se mi klouzalo jak kolo tak i tretry. Když jsem se dostal na konec sekce, už se stmívalo.

Těsně před cestou byl nákladní kontejner, kde už jeden závodník spal, tak jsem se přidal. Vůbec se mi nechtělo v té mokré zimě pokračovat. Rukavice jsem měl mokré, protože já blázen si nedal nepromokavé návleky. Hlavně že jsou v povinné výbavě. Za celý den jsem najel jen 76 kilometrů.

🇬🇧 Day ten 🚵 It slowly started to sink in that this race was long, and I felt the passing of time much more intensely. When I threw up during the night, I felt a bit better, but I definitely wasn’t back to normal. There were still 500 kilometers to the finish, and I knew it was going to hurt.

In the morning, I managed to eat the hotel breakfast and downed a gazillion cups of black tea. The forecast for the day wasn’t favorable, but I knew I didn’t have much choice. I had all the gear with me to push through.

First, I had to climb Tosor Pass. I kept repeating three, eight, nine, three to myself, comparing it with the current elevation. The climb took me six hours. On the steeper sections I felt dizzy and weak in the legs, so I lost a lot of time pushing the bike. After breakfast, I lost my appetite for solid food and tried to get at least some calories in through sugary drinks. Still, in the last 24 hours I was definitely running a calorie deficit.

Just below the summit, I heard a strange rumbling that turned out to be a rockfall. Someone shouted “run,” but I had no idea where to. The echo was bouncing everywhere, and in the thick fog I couldn’t tell if I’d be running straight into the path of the avalanche. Eventually, it went quiet.

But it didn’t end at the top. There was no downhill or flat to look forward to. I joined a goat trail alongside the river, and the whole thing was accompanied by strong wind, rain, hail, and snow. On the muddy tracks, both the bike and my shoes were sliding all over the place. By the time I reached the end of the section, it was already getting dark.

Right before the road, there was a shipping container where another racer was already sleeping, so I joined in. I had zero desire to keep going in that cold and wet weather. My gloves were soaked because, like an idiot, I hadn’t put on my waterproof overmitts. And those are mandatory gear. For the entire day I only managed 76 kilometers.
