I never quite found my rhythm when it came to climbing.  All climbing has felt hard lately, so I relegated myself to moving uphill strictly on heart rate. I was 4 minutes behind record at the turnaround but finished 6 ahead, and that 10 minute difference was built solely on consistency.


This was the kind of homecoming I’ve been waiting for.  I love these lands - I really do. In ways I have tried to express for over a decade now and never managed.  They aren’t even my favorite place to run, as I much prefer the loose scree and lack of briars in the West, but what I have with this space is a real relationship.  During rains and floods, be it sunny days or weeks of gray, Appalachia is as much a part of me as I am it.

I feel like, or at least I hope to feel like (right now I just feel really dizzy), this winter in this place will finally help me to move forward again.  Though our community has dissolved, I still see myself as a vert boy, and that’s not just in fitness but in philosophy.  “I keep my say:do ratio as high as I can” was what we told ourselves on our twentieth hour of marching up and down a snowy mountain back in Montana.  Every person I shared some presence with, and every one I got the opportunity to love - to tell them I love them, I’m sure I still do, and after years now it’s really beginning to seem like that time is through.  

Let the love remain.  I don’t suppose anything else is worth carrying.
