$80 for a lizard that size is a steal

Ended up in Montpelier to finally switch my license and registration over to VT, only 10ish months late. I have serious PTSD from the Haymarket RMV and so I come equipped with every piece of documentation I have ever received. The woman at the counter tells me deadpan that they aren’t doing out of state transfers today. I take a deep breath. “Was that posted anywhere I might have see it before driving 45 minutes?” “It was posted by me saying it just now.”

No smile, no “gotcha”, but she starts taking down my info and it gradually becomes clear that she is joking. I am very obviously not in Boston anymore. The last time I went to renew my license I was behind a big bald dude with “Fuck You” tattooed in cursive on one of the neck rolls at the base of his head. This “joke” in that setting would have caused an absolute riot. 

The rest goes remarkably smooth. I’m out in 30 minutes with my temporary license and new VT plates. Looking forward to not getting the stink eye at the touring lots this weekend. Figure with the extra time I’ll go explore the trail network behind the Capitol building.

Deep snow, more of it falling, Nordic ski and fat bike tracks everywhere. A tower that is reminiscent of Wright’s makes me feel connected to the Fells even though I’m hundreds of miles away on trails I’ve never touched before. It’s slow going in these conditions but it’s a lovely network and it seems like you could stretch it out in any direction you want. Maybe this will become a new pit stop on my VT-MA commutes.
