Shirtless Mile: Month # 214 in a row!

Colorado Trail @ Kenosha Pass: 10,000 ft

Racing is dang tough! 
I knew today would be a challenge. Local legend Josh Moore was in the race and ready to go for the course record. 

Getting here was not too bad. I flew into Nashville and did the 350ish mile drive down. Atlanta was closer... forget why I flew to Nashville?!?!?

The course was mostly twisty turning rooty single-track with roots and leaves and more roots, and a few short double track and dirt road sections as well. There was a 7.5 mile "lap" which the runners did 2 times. 

Josh went out hard! He was flying along in the lead. It was all I could do to stay within striking distance. He was 25 yards in front. Pain had set in. He kept hammering trying to extend his lead. I kept trying to eat into his lead. First 2 miles we sprinted on the single track and finally at mile 2 I had caught up. He was no longer surging. At mile 3 there was a quarter mile flat road section. I drew alongside Josh with the intent of stretching the legs... but my body said, "Be honest, Take the Lead." I did. It hurt.

We flowed onto an uphill single-track and I noticed my lead slowly increased. I could not let up or listen to the screaming pain, no, I would push it more. At mile 6 or so, the course followed a downhill road next to a single-track. I made the mistake of jumping off the road and onto the single-track. Instantly, I realized my mistake and went back to the road. I lost 5 to 10 seconds here. Josh was flying  down the road after me. 

I went and finished the first loop. My lead was 1 minute or so. I pushed the second loop but soon Josh was no where to be seen. Unbeknownst to me, he had decided to call it a day and be done after lap 1. Not his day. 

I extended myself on the first loop and got the FKT for 1 lap. Missed the CR by a little bit. Racing is tough, and it hurt today, but rising to the occasion is worth it. 

Project 50-50 continues!!!!
Today was my first Mississippi race!
37 different state wins!
37 out of 50!
