Zwift - Group Ride: Long - Stage 1 - Tour de Zwift on Shisa Shakedown in Makuri Islands

Wasn't sure if I should push it with a longer effort after yesterday's bonk/dehydration, but legs felt good so jumped in an informal "race" on the long course this week. Most of it was fresh in my memory from this week's ZRL TTT, so knew what to expect.

Front pack formed quickly from the start and was done to 13 after the first climb up to the proper start of the course (lead-in). With lots of fluids on hand and feeling strong, I often was on the front keeping the pace high and always giving an extra (moderate) kick on the sprints to take them mostly uncontested.

Cruising through the climbs up the Pain Cave and then in Neokyo, made a point to always put a bit of an attack in on the descents. Next was the Castle climb, kept it steady as people surged and still came over the top with the pack.

Made a move on the slight downhill on the approach to the final and biggest climb, Temple KOM. Broke away and forced a few to push hard to catch me just as the climb started, I settled in to 5w/kg and found it surprisingly sustainable at essentially the 2hr mark of racing today! In the end did 4.9w/kg for almost 5mins, after the initial surge to break clear of the group 💪

However on the Temple KOM is where the race was decided, with Zeggelaar would breakaway with ~20secs by the top of the climb. I led the chase and pulled a group of 4 others through the descent and brought it down to 15secs but couldn't sustain the chase mostly on my own (and also couldn't surge more to bridge up solo).

From here he would go out to ~30secs, then come back down again when I attacked on the final long downhill but I petered out and the group behind surged back up.

With first place out of reach, it was now a battle of attrition to see who'd take second on the uphill finish. Managed to pace up the hill with the others at 4.5w/kg, but when it came time to sprint my legs didn't have much surge left in them and I missed the wheel ahead (despite my draft boost).

2 riders got ahead so took 4th for this informal race. Overall very happy to have this much left in the legs after how rough they felt post-ride yesterday (and hard short races earlier)! Now for a nice rest day and then ready for ZRL next Wed 😏
