Today’s stage was only 72kms, but with an extra 50kms before and 50kms after. Beautiful day, exactly the reason why I’m here. The scenery as we got to Lofoten proper was out of this world, with 1000m cliffs soaring out of the ocean, picturesque fishing villages protected by the fjords, lush and green and rugged. 

The day started out of Stokmarknes with a gentle 15kms at our own pace, to meet the ferry. We all piled onto the ferry for a calm 20 minute ride. This side is much more touristic, with more traffic, so the race organizers controlled the ride for the next 35kms, kept pace under control so everyone could stay together. And perfect spot for it, as we rode through the fjords and beautiful scenery, was nice to be able to look up instead of hammering! We regrouped at the start line, and took off for the 72km Stage. This is where my day went a bit sideways. We had a couple of kms of rough roads, and it must have loosened a couple of bolts on my crank. When I stood to match the accelerations coming out of the first tunnel, by crank bolts exploded, leaving just one lonely bolt to hold the whole contraption together. At this point there was nothing to do but watch everyone go by and wait for the sag at the end of the field. Thankfully the mechs got me sorted, and I was off again. But at this point I was at the back of the field with not much hope of catching the wicked pace that a short 72 km stage commands. But was fine, I met a bunch of friendly folks as I worked my way back up the field, and got to the line. The scenery was so spectacular, it was fine being on my own. And I made the most of the 50kms commute to the hotel, stopping to take lots of photos. In events like this, you take the good with the bad, but when you see the photos it’s pretty clear the good wins today!
