Q: What do Elvis and Eliud Kipchoge have in common?
A: Both are official world record holders after the Berlin Marathon, 2018.
Well, Kipchoge had an advantage he was wearing less.
Well, where do I begin. I think first a big shout out to the guys at Strava and Unsanctioned-Running (follow them on IG) for organising absolutely everything, including the totally rad and awesome Elvis jumpsuit, and for basically making this possible for me. Also to the people at Maurten for supplying me with the race fuel, drinks and gels.
I won't bore you with the details but getting to Berlin and to the start line was a challenge in itself. Injury in the build up to Berlin, work commitments the day before and a horrible cold caught two days before the race. Still I made it, and it was worth all the effort.
Arrive in Berlin 9 pm, pizza at 10.30 pm pre race-day and a full race briefing, of course I just had to try on the outfit for some photos too.
Race-day was the easy part, well I thought that at least. A toilet stop at 21 km meant I lost my group. 2 mins of taking suit off and then putting it on again and I was good to go. From then on I was alone and the rhythm wasn't there. I battled and fought to the end and still made it to take the new official WR by 3 minutes.
Words can't describe how it feels to be a WR holder, but so many people played a huge part.
Not least, Berlin. Absolutely huge Kudos to the Berlin support. You were amazing and not a step went by without a chant of "Elvis lives" or "Go Elvis". Thank you.
