This was supposed to be a reality check on how well I could handle 120 miles on the bike over not-too-challenging terrain (my previous high for the year was less than 90 miles). What it ended up being was a grit-fest with actual race tactics over terrain that was much more challenging than I expected.

There were 18 in the 120-group, and the pace was high at the start. The first test came at mile 7—the climb up Powerline Rd. Holy cow!!! Long and steep—I think the average pitch was 12%, and there were sections that had to be 20% or more. I was at my limit on some of those sections but managed to get to the top 2nd, and 7 of us formed a group afterwards (except for me they were all in their 30s and 40s).

First pit stop and we slowed to see if anyone wanted to get food or water. One guy kept going, and we all kind of shrugged our shoulders—nobody was interested in chasing this early in the ride. The 6 of us remaining formed a strong group that kept the pace high but allowed quick breaks at the pit stops and stayed together until one finally dropped off at mile 80.

Fireworks at mile 110. A huge climb up Fowler—not quite as bad as Powerline, but still very tough. I’d formed a plan to attack it when I saw what people did on Powerline (and assuming I still had the legs at that point) and got away from everybody, but the guy who beat me up Powerline stayed within about 50 meters and was able to bridge back up to me up top. We worked together to make sure the break stuck, but heading toward the final descent he got a gap on me on one of the final little rises and I couldn’t close it down on the descent.

So, 3rd place, made a race move and stuck it, and handled 120 miles strong to the end. Also KOM'd two segments (Richey Hollow and Hwy 96—not sure why they're not showing up). Best of all, I met and got to ride with several solid riders who know how to work together. I had a blast!

I think I can stop worrying about whether my training for MiW3 has been enough and rather enjoy these final two weeks before the event.
