This ride happened one day later than the planned. There was a huge crew riding it on Saturday and I even started with them, but I had a sliced tire while crossing the GGB so that was over for me on that day.









So I decided to do solo on the next day. 









I’ve started before the sunrise, which makes the conditions fantastic: there was absolutely no one in Mt Tam when I first hit the East peak. Riding without the humming of engines (only nature sounds) and the threat of being hit by a careless driver is more than I can dream of. There was a guy close to Pantoll chanting to the ocean during the sunrise (at his back) to make things more surreal. 









I was feeling reasonably well, but since there was no one to push the pace I took it easy. Instead of precise data on the Garmin, I was using for the first time the V-meter (http://goo.gl/HQetCk), which needs calibration from my side.









From Mill Valley and from Bolinas I was feeling ok, but as it comes closer to lunch time things start to be more difficult. Lunch was in Fairfax, which included doing a clockwise alpine dam (I sincerely thought of descending rocky springs trail instead of taking Alpine Dam since it would be a single downhill, but that didn’t happen). After lunch, the fitness level went downhill and I started to feel tired and the demons were louder trying to convince me to end this madness. After dragging along to the third East peak (from Fairfax), I’ve ignored the demons and headed to the last climb. Stinson. It’s closer. Easy. 









When I reach the woods while climbing Stinson, I notice a slow leak which brings down the morale. While changing the tube I find a small cut on the tire — nothing to worry, but I’m quite disappointed with the Gran Bois tires. I’ve been riding it though silk roads and I’ve had already too many punctures in less than a thousand kilometers. I guess it is time to go back to the Gatorskins.









With the tube replaced and low pressure since I didn’t use CO2 I’ve finished the climb. Victory. Only 40km now to go back home. Should be easy. 









Unless there’s a murderous squirrel along the way.  I was descending from the West Peak for the 4th time today and many times I saw squirrels, but this time one was thirsty for blood. On the other lane, there was a car coming, at my lane, well, I was there. And the squirrel tried to cross nevertheless. It jumped in front of me, I’ve touched the brakes and it hit my leg in mid air. That was our luck, because certainly it was only dizzy by the impact and it didn’t go through my wheels which would cause his death and serious injuries to me: the asphalt at that time of the day doesn’t get any softer.









Finished the descent, took HW1, crossed the zoo, I mean, Sausalito, and got home for a well deserved Ravioli with Chianti.









(poor) Nutrition:

10 hours before the ride: 500 ml of Ommegang’s Three philosophers

Breakfast: Prosciutto and Swiss cheese sandwich, cup of milk, cup of coffee

During the ride: small bag of almonds (~200g), 1 banana, 2 bites of the worst bar of the world (Odwalla’s nourishing bar), 4 water bottles (one for each climb. It would have a fifth one if I didn’t forget my water bottle at the East Peak), one celebratory can of Coke

mid-ride lunch: two hot dogs at Gestalt Haus, two glasses of water, one orange juice, one double espresso









Wildlife sightings:









6 Turkeys (both on Seven Sisters and at the first climb), 1 small deer along Bo-Fax (close to the golf course), a few squirrels (one evil from hell), several BMW drivers, and even more tourists at the GGB.
