Audax Indigo Epic MTB DNF

Very hot day and night (still 30+ C after midnight) and restless sleep in the back of the car, 0315 alarm for 4am start. Chose to use my geared MTB this year, proved to be a wise move. Probably low-mid 20s C at the start, mild N wind. Kevin started off very quickly and not long after Heyfield there were only 3 of us. Andrew was his usual quick speed up the early hills but the rough descents were tricky on his CX bike. We dropped him for a while after he lost and retrieved an ejected water bottle. K & A rode away from me through Rawson where I ate a muesli bar, caught up with them at the Thomson Dam checkpoint. Andrew went a bit hard chasing Kev and I on the climb out of the feed, he caught us but said he'd been at threshold to do so. Really pleasant through Aberfeldy to Matlock, arguably the best part of the course. Another decent feed at Matlock checkpoint, then enjoyed the corrugated gravel descent into Woods Point for the first time ever, loving fat tyres and front suspension. Temp rising climbing Frenchmans Gap, then more corrugated gravel to Jamieson. Kevin felt lack of training volume so I towed him the last few km. All rejoined at the Jamieson checkpoint and we left together. Quite warm but partly overcast and a gentle tailwind up Mt Skene, felt good so tried to improve my time, did so but probably spent too much energy doing so (see image). Quite dehydrated. Struggled to eat at the Lazarini Spur checkpoint, rolled out feeling tired and had to sit behind Kev and Andrew for most of the way back to Glenmaggie, luckily it was a tailwind this year. Recovered enough not to get dropped on the last few climbs, we all rolled in together.
