Grizzly Grandfondo Part 4 Success 

Day one Ride to Martinborough for Airbnb. nice route  along the coast. Had a good amount of sweet gravel. Got off to late start figuring out what backpacking gear I wanted. Local bike shop has a lot to choose from. I spent literally 4 hours trying to figure out what I wanted, but couldin't make a decision in time. I should have planned this out weeks before I did this journey lol. I now realize what I want though. Its Specialized bura bura stabilizer saddle bag. Stupid tho, because I have a carbon zipp post and it wasn't compatible with it. I have to get a carbon specialized post or just aluminum post. I might go with front bag for the future but still deciding.  My equipment choice was blackburn frame bag which annoyed the hell out of me on day one because my knees would rub ugh!! I realized I packed the wrong stuff in there. And than I went with my ortlieb backpack. That was good, but just remember to stretch my back every 30min or so. Nevertheless day one was good

Day 2 - just go with plan A or plan b route not that stupid backpack route that claims to be so great. If your keen to hike a bike 3-4 hours up a mountain through Aorangi Forest than this would be for you. Gravel route leading to sutherlands hut was amazing so much fun! After Sutherlands hut the hike a bike for what felt like an eternity started. For what ever reason I kept persisting to go this way. I guess I kept hoping the route would get better, but no not really. the worze part was that when the route went down through Aorangi Forest it was far to rocky / steep to ride my specialized crux through. I could nimble through here and there riding a little, but mostly touch an go per se. After I got through that section I was already like 5+ hours into my ride and I was bit knackered. so I rode back to Martinborough on the road. thankfully through was grocery store close by because I lost my back water bottle somewhere along the way. must've bounced out. seeing cape palliser or dwimorberg will have to hold off till next time


Day 3 lets try to at least ride a part of the loop that I wanted to yesterday. very fun great gravel loop east of Gladstone area. descending was so much fun on the ridge type roads sweeping down into the valley. after I got done with that loop I was about 4 hours into my ride. I stopped fueled up in Martinborugh. Lol these last 3 days I ate a fair amount of Snickers, Mars, and gummy worms. And drinked a lot of coke and Gatorade for sure. After the stop through Martinborogh I trugged along for a while into the headwind. Finally got to rimutaka trail thank goodness. that was pretty awesome beginning single track. Besides the annoying goat that didin't know how to run off the beaten path like a sheep would do. After that it opened up to a fun uphill section with 4 old tunnels to go through. Descents going back into upper hut was pretty fun. Started to feel a lot better at this point. I guess because I knew I only had like 2.5 hours to go and it was a tailwind pretty much going back. 

Overall fun journey. Also should have just split this into 3 rides I feel. seems right because it was a 3 day thing
