45:23 for 9.62k on my watch. First overall. Thank God.

I hadn’t run this race in five years, and with nothing else to do with my fitness on the weekend, signed up on short notice. I am thankful to be able to sign up on short notice — I like the HKMSA and the race director over the years has been helpful and cheerful. I recommend HKMSA races.

A chill start and a chill finish. Apparently, a 12:15 start for prize presentation — it started at 11:00! Thank God — so I might run again. Thank God for a coffee shop at the race venue.

Seeing friendly faces, not just runners but also volunteers, was the blessing of God.

The weather was fine. We haven’t hit summer yet. Thank God. Not too much sun, humidity and heat. Lots of wind! 

Since my rough sleeping three nights ago, I have been sleeping more than I usually sleep, thankfully. 22:20 bedtime for 06:40 wakeup. Double at home. Hot yirgacheffe. No brekkie. North face backpack. Visor. 07:20 to HKU MTR. Hydration along the way. Triple. Bus to Pokfulam reservoir road and arrival at 08:15.

No sunglasses, no shirt, no sunblock. No water. No gloves — they would have been useful on the technical, horse trail descent. Adidas spandex. Green race belt. First time with C3 toe socks, and they held up well. First time taking Sub-2 shoes on a “trail” race because, knowing the route, there is barely any trail. The shoes are fine — barely any slippage on the first trail and besides, I probably would have slipped in any shoe — and, while I will wear the zoom speed racer for next week’s race, if the “trail” is not too formidable, I will take the sub-2 out for the following week’s race.

I felt better than last week, thank God. No flu feeling. Just fierce cough and cold feeling, before and during and after the race. I was breathing badly during the race.

I was unsure about the pacing for this race besides letting the race unfold. Some young men foolishly went out too fast for the first two kilometers and I followed them until only Paul and I remained after three kilometers. A two-horse race. I didn’t know if I would be able to pass him. I closed on him at the technical descent. The first opportunity was on the gentle slope immediately after the first checkpoint. Paul overtook me on the catchwater. Then I overtook Paul on the trail, and tried to put distance on the stairs and downhill descent to the finish line.
