Dug out some of the winter gear I had put away for this ride. 
What's with the scarlet tanagers this year? We saw 2 on our last ride, one squashed on the road in Shelburne and one in the trees in Charlemont. Then today, two were on the edge of the road as I rode by so I turned around for another look. One of the two bobbed down the road and came right up to me. I managed to catch it and gave it a boost into the forest. It was a young one just learning to fly. Mom or Dad watched from above. Now I wonder if the squashed one we saw was a young one too. I rarely see these birds; sometimes it's years between sightings.
Just read the Wikipedia entry on scarlet tanagers. It couldn't have been a fledgling, it's too early in the year. Probably it was a female.
