I missed the entry deadline for this morning’s 25 mile TT, so got over excited and got one in for a 50 and 100. So had to try a bit further on this bike, in the position, at decent intensity, etc.

I waited for the rain to run through, well, had a bit of a sleep in, and with the roads wet I wanted the swimming cap shoe covers on, and they take forever to get on.

Two loops planned, Crail, New Gilston, Craigrothie about 45 miles, and Anstruther, Elie 30 miles.

The first started well enough after a run (warm up?) through town. Starting with a climb the numbers were on the high side, but felt ok, and this was a learning experience. But quickly I noticed the undulating course was not going to give me an even power figure to watch. I should have made more effort to keep it even and I found myself trying to put a bit extra in after town/roundabout tootling.

Had a rain shower at Peat Inn but nothing much. I’d done most of the climbing at this point, dispatched my first gel around the hour mark, but was wary about the fast run back to St Andrews - I always end up daydreaming and numbers drop off the charts. I tried. It wasn’t great I don’t think but a working progress.

Ok. Coming into town. Practise bottle handover time 😂. Gemma was waiting arm extended just outside DRA student hall. I tossed the empty bottle, avoided pothole, scrub speed, eek scrub some more. Success!

Busier through town this time, urk, but I took the opportunity to neck my second gel. Second climb out past East Sands it was obvious this loop wasn’t going to be as good as the first. I was tiring.

The wind had got up, and the tiring thing hit fast, I was questioning the plan into and through Anstruther, I nearly stopped at the shop in Elie to refuel but elected to press on. Not particularly pretty but got it done.

Takeaways; need more gels, two bottles was only just enough - and I should be drinking more anyway, set out steadier or find a more even route.

Back to the long distance stuff next week but will need a couple more of these before the 100. I think 50 is doable.
