Morning Run

This was my first 14’er. 14,000 feet of elevation. In my mind this was supposed to be a lot easier than what it actually became 😅
I started off the hike with my wife at a very comfortable pace. At about two miles in she headed back down and I went in ahead solo. I picked up the pace and marched on through to he unknown. I made two crucial mistakes on this hike: not enough hydration and not eating a solid snack/meal to help me power through or just simply taking some more snacks than what I took. I did drink a lot of the natural spring water coming down the mountain. It was cold and crisp and was exactly what my body needed. I was a bit concerned that I might react to it negatively but I’m still alive! The views climbing up and amazing. You have to be up there to see it yourself. I encountered quite a bit of wildlife including mountain goats/rams(?), some squirrels that were the size of mice and these big fat chipmunk looking critters. Seeing that was really neat. 

If I’m being honest I wasn’t sure if I could finish this hike yet alone hike all the way back down. I was very fatigued and my breathing and heart rate were up the roof lol. I considered telling Alva to pick me up once I got to the top. There’s a road that takes you to the top of Pikes Peak and you can easily see the horizon without taking a few hours of hiking to see it lol. Coming back down was a lot easier but still challenging. I was ready to get down and get a good meal and shower. I powers through with some run/hike action. Near the end it was mostly walking lol. 

All in all I am glad I accomplished what I set myself to do. I didn’t give up and I didn’t have to be rescued lol.
