A Day of Postholing on Hawkins and Islip Ridges

So today was an experiment. A lot of people on trail do the 24h challenge, trying to go as far as possible in 24 hours, so I figured I’d give it a shot. I picked a section of trail that’s mostly flat and went as far as I could starting at 10:30AM. I took a couple of short breaks, including eating a ton of fast food at Cajon Pass. At about 7AM, I stopped at the Deep Creek Hot Springs for a soak along the way, and then got back on trail. I finished the 24h challenge doing 65 miles. I had wanted to do 68 miles (110k on the 110th day!) but it wasn’t in the cards today. But then it was 10:30 and I still had the day in front of me, so I just kept going until about 6pm. For the most part, my body felt fine, but I started getting really tired and sleepy. The main impediment was just mental acuity, feeling a bit foggy. By the end of the second night, I started to see things, which I think weren’t there like a Wampa running across my path repeatedly. Anyway, I finished, and then passed out halfway through my dinner and woke up 13 hours later, feeling much better. A crazy day to be sure!
