Morning Run

Tre and running in the airport.

The run started at 8:20am at the Trailhead in Milford. The early morning weather was nice with cloudy skies and temps around 65. I was shooting to average 7:30 miles but went out a little quick. I soon settled into my pace as the sun came out and the temps began to rise. 

My fueling: gel every 6-7 miles and 1 20 ounce bottle of
Tailwind with some water was all I needed through the first half. 

It soon became a busy day out on the towpath and I had to swerve around bikers, geese and their babies, and other people walking and running. The first half is a beauty stretch as you run up on a high vista overlooking the Raritan River - and you traverse some of the most adorable towns in NJ! 

By the time I reached the marathon mark at Washington’a Crossing, I was already getting a sunburn from the direct sunlight. My body still felt good. The Trenton section is what did me in. 15 miles,  with no aid, and running the trail with all that direct sunlight. I tapped out of 40 ounces pretty quick, had lost about 8 minutes here with road crossings and getting turned around due to park construction on the trail.

By the time I reached Princeton, NJ, I was pretty gassed and started to feel the effects of heat exhaustion and sunburn. I went through 50 miles  around 6:20-6:30 so I knew I was on a solid pace still and right on goal.

The run then became about taking the time needed to get myself back to a level to where I could finish the run. I increased my fluid intake by double and it helped some but took some time before I felt better.

My pace slowed with some walk breaks but after going through to mile 55, and eating some olives and cheese- the fats and oils was exactly what my body needed.
I hit the next 4 mile section going from 8:30 miles down to 7:20 and my legs came back. I finally ran out of steam a little with 5 miles to go but gave all I had to get to the finish.

The D&R canal towpath is a must run trail! By actually running the whole thing, it is way more diverse than I ever expected. If you want to discover NJ by foot, this is a great option to do it! I’d love to run this the opposite direction one day- preferably in fall or winter when the temps would be cooler.
