Notes:
- I was a bit tired and my stomach was feeling a bit off today, especially in the morning.
- This trailhead was similar to Convict Lake, but without the fisher-people, and with a slightly broader canyon to ascend.
- Climb to the pass was basically: a few miles of desert, a few miles through aspen groves, a few miles through conifer forest, the two lakes, and then trail over broken rocks to the summit.
- This trail is really long and climbs very gradually (at points, painfully gradually). A couple of guys at the top of the pass didn't realize they were on the pass because the trail heads off to the east and doesn't gain/lose appreciable elevation for a while. This probably explains the popularity with trail runners, it wouldn't be too hard to jog most of the way up/down.
- Scenery at Big McGee Lake and above was pretty nice, below that a bit of a slog.
- For the route up Red Slate, ignore Secor's description. There's a remarkably good use trail directly from the pass to the summit. It looks a bit steep through some white rocks at the top, but the use trail actually switchbacks through here. In case the trail isn't obvious enough, someone built cairns all along the way. Calling it class 2 is slightly overstated.
- From the summit, you can walk out in a few different directions for good views of the Ritter and Clark Ranges, Convict Creek drainage, the Silver Divide, or the Mono Divide. Couldn't really see south beyond the Mono Divide.
- There were fields of sky pilot in various states of bloom, very pretty!
- Saw another ranger today out doing trail work.
- Popular trail for backpacking, saw a lot of folks out, including an excited dad (from Minnesota so he knows bugs, he told me), who kept getting a bit too close. Everyone else was good about masks/distance.
