Tuesday Night Groceries Under Montara 

Every Single (Possible) Spine Take 2

AKA: Midnight Scramble
We were sitting at camp and looking up at the ridge line that creates Dusy Basin.  Devin noted a huge block making an obvious overhang from the ridge.  Was it a car? a spaceship??   I pointed out the gradual ridge that led to a couple of "giant's steps" before the precarious block.  Devin said he would take the "avalanche gully"up to the steps. In that moment I can't say I fully trusted the mountaineering judgement of an 8 year old!  However, after 22 days immersed in the John Muir Trail I wondered how much of the Sierra Mountains' whispers he had let become part of his spirit and intuition.

After being blessed with an amazing backcountry dinner of mac&cheese and fresh trout in mango salsa and the evening coming to a close, my curiosity began to sprout.  With nothing but a full belly and my watch I decided I'd go explore until the mountains told me to turn around and go back to the hammock.   Devin's route selection up to the ridge line was spot on.  The "giant's steps" were formidable.  

I finally got to test out the Altra Kings as climbing shoes. I've worn down the lugs significantly and they stuck to granite slabs like one expects from climbing rubber. They were solid when doing foot jams, and earned enough confidence to commit to a 10ft. hand-jam crack.
