Beautiful disaster. 20:36 unsupported FKT, but I was absolutely hoping/planning/dreaming of going under Kyle's mark, clearly that didn't happen... Basically snowing ash from pine gulch fire from the start. Set myself out at 10min in front of Kyle's ghost until I lost time dropping to a snowfield for water on Iso. Skipped isolation lake since ouzel spring got better review than expected and it was lovely. Still that 1.5L fillip did not last me well to paiute. I saw a snowfield west side of Algonquin and dropped super far down to gather some gross trickle that barely filled anything. Going up Paiute itself was rough and clearly at that point I was way off Kyle's time. Made the call to just keep moving, tbh I do not have desire to repeat this, it's a heavy line. Between Toll and Paiute I was literally trying to crawl underneath the rocks for 20min to find the water, but it was too deep to get anything, so settled on eating some snowballs. Luckily, found a great stream off the Pawnee snowfield to chug a few bottles which gave a good boost for a while. Told myself if I could get to Navajo under 15hrs (I think? Whatever arbitrary time threshold) I could finish it. A false sunset came early from the smoke layer and as night came the smoke really turned up. Made it through Arikaree in daylight and then clicked on the headlamp en route to deshawa. Once dark, the scrambling quadrupled in time because I was afraid of lose rock or stepping on something not fixed to the earth so I was checking every hold over and over every move. Very fun though, sending that ridge in total darkness as ash rained from the sky. What a thing. At night the ground just falls away from you so quick that exposure felt enormous, but also continuous since a 10ft drop looked the same as 1000ft. Faded a lot going up Arapaho, just really hard to breath, had to stop a bunch. I would click off the headlamp to save battery which was a really cool view. Finally on top of Arapaho I figure I could just walk over to south in like 20-25min but that thing is CONFUSING in the dark and just staying ridge proper felt too risky with my coordination. Finally to trail I descended straight toward the TH but somehow ended up on this cliffed pillar in the middle of this gully and had to hike back up and around, which at that point was so slow it added a ton of time, I thought I had a shot at least of putting the supported time sub 20, but whatevs. Such a grand adventure!
