What a day. I definitely got what I wished for in signing up for this 100 mile gravel race. I was wanting a challenge that I have never done before, and I got it. I knew it was gonna be a tough day when the extended forecast showed 20 to 30 mph winds out of the S. And I felt every bit of that wind for most of the day. Temperatures at the start was about 48° with a 15 mph wind. Went back and forth a couple of times on what to wear. I wanted to stay warm early on but I also didn’t wanna get too hot later in the day. The race went off in an unconventional manor. Lots of confusion on where exactly to start. The race went off with people still at their cars getting ready. Nonetheless the race was off and two guys went off the front. I tried for a few miles to keep them within my view since I didn’t know the course very well but that only lasted for a few miles. I stayed in 3rd the entire day. The course did not disappoint. It definitely had some proper gravel. And with my cyclocross set up I was on pins and needles all day afraid of getting a flat. Came across the first creek crossing around mile 42 and had shin deep water. The other two Creek crossing just got the feet wet. Then went into Martinsville at the halfway point and stopped at a gas station. After that I just couldn’t wait to start hitting some roads heading north to get a tail wind. Gravel racing is just so different. There’s literally no time to recover especially on a day with so much wind. It just sucked because you’d finally get a road that was nice but you were going straight into the wind. Or you would turn a corner heading north with a nice tail wind and you would hit really thick gravel. At about mile 85 I was honestly ready to be done. I had to shed cloths real quick on the side of the road. I had ran out of food and just had water left. By mile 97 I was completely drained. Nonetheless ended up coming in third place overall and I can’t complain about that. Definitely had a day out there.
