Mapped out this route nearly a year ago, it’s the greatest elevation gain in the entire world of a continuous climb that could be done in one day! There was no access to the ocean where I started so I settled for starting at about 200’ above sea level. Ran the first 6 miles with my knife out after hearing rustling and a feral pig snort in the sugar cane thicket at my start location. Climb was pretty gradual on first half of run, much of which was done in the dark. Second half of route was much harder, especially the last 6-7 miles through lava and scree. The final climb up 500’ of loose scree to the summit was torture, I could only gain about 50’ at a time and then had to stop and catch my breath. For sure the hardest thing I’ve ever done, and I don’t see myself doing this one again now that it’s checked off my list!
