Had a really fun time getting after it on this beautiful Thanksgiving day. Came in to this run with a really good attitude and excited to blast a shorter distance. Was especially excited because my cousin, who currently lives in Austraila, also signed up for the race and this will be our first time going head to head ever. He's a big reason I started running in the first place so to actual go up against him is pretty cool. Started out going a pretty fast pace and tried to ride it as long as possible. I told myself over and over again before the race that I had to go faster than my 8k pace because I was afraid my body would just lock in there because that's what's used to. I believe that thinking got me going a little too fast as I was feeling it eariler than I should of. Made my way to the turnaround and back and tried to keep myself focused. Knowing where I'm at distance and time wise in a race or workout make it hard to stay mentally on it and I was starting to feel that when I started the Gallup Loop. I was worried that the trial would be flooded but they put new wood chips down which was really nice. It was a bit crowded in there and at one point a kid started running next to me. After I got out of the trials I was pretty tired. I just kept having a positive mindset and kept going. When I passed the main bridge, I knew I had 1 kilometer to go and used that to keep pushing myself. I know my kick is probably one of worst out there so I tried to start pushing eariler. Once I hit the playset, I checked my watch for 5k and continued to do so every 0.1 k after that. That hurt my final kick and I was debating whether to punish myself with some 100m sprints after but I decided not to. Even though it was not the best, my kick was still good and I need to make a note to work on it in the future. Very happy with how this race ended up even though I didn't hit my goal of sub-16. I believe I put my all in to this race or if not my all, a very large deal of it. This race was an interesting one with COVID-19 and being alone and I am happy I ran it and continued what I hope to make a tradition. Since it is Thanksgiving, I have to give thanks to many things. I am thankful for running and the people that I have met through it and especially those who have literally ran by my side for much of the beautiful ups and downs I have gone through. I am thankful that I am healthy and I am able to put one foot in front of the other nevertheless run. I am thankful I go to my dream school and that I have the ability to only worry about my schoolwork and running. I'm also thankful for all of my family, friends, pets, coworkers, and everyone else. Bottom line is no matter what is going on in the world, there is always good and we have good lives. I think Travis Tritt said it best, "It's a Great Day to be Alive." Let's go.
