I was already planning a Bear Mountain attempt and then my new tire and tube arrived yesterday, so I really had no excuse to not give it a go. I did some recon as a warmup and discovered that the gate was closed, so I wouldn't be able to ride the mountain in one attempt. My plan was to ride hard, but not all out to the gate, then rest a couple minutes and try to go all out the rest of the way. I felt good on the first half, standing up when necessary and still getting good power out while seated. I rode the 2.5 miles in 9:02, nearly a minute faster than my time during my previous Bear Mountain best. I averaged 332 watts (340 adj). It was a hard, but not all out effort, as I had planned. I think I could have held it the whole way with the right motivation. I let my HR get down to the 150s before continuing. But I quickly realized my power meter had stopped working, so I stopped. I could only get spotty readings and that sort of killed my desire, so I came back down. I decided to not do the full loop I had planned, but instead target a couple climbs where I didn't care if I had my power meter working or not. One of those was the first .7 miles of Bear Mountain, up to the roundabout. I thought I could get the KOM for the segment with a good effort, so I put one in, and sure enough I got it by 2 seconds. I feel a little bad about it because I'm pretty sure everyone else in the top 10 set their times en route to the full Bear Mountain, but oh well. I rode back to the train station where I had stashed my stuff, grabbed it, and continued on route 9. I made my way to the East Mountain Road climb, put my stuff in the bushes and made a hard effort up the really steep road. I rode .95 miles in 5:59, which is just 9.5 mph, but its a bit over 11% grade. My power meter had come back to life, but died again for the last hundred meters. My average up to that point was about 350 watts, which is definitely the best power output I've had for an effort of that duration. As I came back down, my wheels lost traction on a left hand turn, and I smacked the pavement hard. I thought a little road rash was the worst of it, but I quickly realized something was wrong with my collarbone. I couldn't ride off, so a kind local woman helped me out and called an ambulance. At the hospital they confirmed I had broken my collarbone. I'm not sure how long it'll be until I can ride again.
