Wow, that is a phenomenal race Erik! Great work. All your hard training is definitely showing. 8:50 is an amazing pace for a 50 miler, you are looking really strong.
@Brad, well the Kal-Haven course is generally downhill, so on the Indiana Trail 50 course I expect the pace to be significantly slower than that. But I was comfortable at my heart rate and felt strong at the finish. Dialed in the nutrition a bit today, which I think helped.
What sort of nutrition do you use? I'm always curious about what other runners use/do for nutrition
@brad I've been using Vitargo (carbs) and Clif Electrolyte in my water, then pop a Clif Shot Blok ever couple miles. Depending on the aid stations, I may grab fruit, potatoes, pb&j, grilled cheese depending how I'm feeling. The whole drink mix and shot bloks make my mouth feel pretty sugary, so sometimes I'll grab a little plain water at an aid station to clean out my mouth.
Cool, thanks for the info Erik! I have been using tailwind nutrition for the past few years as my primary, with occasional aid station supplementation. But I started trying to become more fat adapted about 8 weeks ago, so I've been doing all my training runs fasted and still not sure what I will use for racing.
@Brad - I've heard of people training to be more fat adapted, but I haven't gone down that road yet. I'd love to hear more about what you are doing and how it's going.
I've thought about giving Tailwind a try as well, but haven't yet. I might give it a shot when my current supply runs out.
Love the point to point race / downhill profile!
