Focus: Fatty Acid Oxidation. 
Fasted state can be achieved by training in the morning, before eating any breakfast or other carbohydrate source. Take some food/energy drink on the ride with you in case you need some fuel before the ride is over. But try to ride as long as possible without eating.

Don't worry about straying out of the target intensity range for short periods on steeper climbs or descents - just try for as much time within target zone as possible. Try to choose as flat or rolling course if possible to maximise time in target zone.

PURPOSE: Enhances aerobic fitness by stimulating greater mitochondrial biogenesis (production of mitochondria - the power house of the cell), enhanced capillarization in the muscles, development of slow-twitch muscles fibres and trains body to more efficiently use fat as primary fuel source.

Ultimately, these endurance rides contribute to improved aerobic capacity, lactate threshold and muscular endurance, and reduced VLamax (maximal lactate building rate).
