Played it smart, I knew the 50+ class would be coming like a banshee.  So I just sat in for the first 8.5 miles.  Sure enough here they come.  As soon as they got there Big John Atkins turned on the after burners.

I know his riding style so I just did all I could and hung on.  We instantly got a gap and then Johnny just keeps laying down the power.  I helped him as much as I could but make no mistake he was doing the work.

At about mile 20-25 we caught the two guys in the 40 class that had broken away at the start.  I think they were surprised to see us coming so fast.  We settled in with them with everyone doing as much as they could.  

At one point I looked back and we had a really big group of open class guys trying to hang on our wheel.  Only 1 guy ever pulled through but I guess it doesn’t really matter.

Fast forward to the end and everyone was hurting, it was just so hard.  I feel like our time really started to fall of the last few miles.

I kind of knew how the end was going to shake out.  I could tell from the power meter the winner had a lot of power on his pulls and I could tell the 3rd places guys power was slipping.  As far as me I was hurting but I still had some left.  My main problem was I had already had two bouts of cramps.  The last mile was a hill and the winner just as I thought had a little more left in the tank than me and the 3rd place guy cracked.  

In the end I was very happy with the performance.  I would have had 3rd in the open class.  Johnny had the best overall time.
