(Watch split the activity by accident).  TLDR: 1’/1’ Fartlek up the two Hope Pass Climbs. Excellent.

10:00: Ran from Twin Lakes again out across the river and to the base of the HP trail. Felt good. Idea was two do two fartlek sections up the two climbs.

This first one was a pretty hard squeeze but I really wanted to go for a sub 50 climb and knew it would be close. I was keeping an eye on the vertical meters per minute (or actually, min/100m vert, which was right around 5’00 or on pace for right about 50 minutes). Felt really, really strong. Legs had plenty of pop and I was moving really well.

Squeezed the last 5 minutes continuously, but otherwise it was all fartlek. Just snuck under 50 with 49’14 to the top (and 65 minutes from the parking lot).

Didn’t stop but continued down very easy the back side of HP. Felt aerobically recovered quickly but legs were a bit jelly, so kept the pace relaxed and tried not to fall. Hit the bottom and took <1 to pee and then turned back around and did the same thing back up. (And still somehow got my PR on the descent - I’ve definitely improved over the last 6 weeks!)

Legs definitely felt more tired on this climb, but still had lots of energy. I knew the record up was like 35-36 minutes and so I was trying to do some math and figured I’d be close (in the end, I was only about 30 seconds off for the #2 time). I’ll get it next go-round.

Hit the top and recovered on the way down again. Felt pretty good and actually got going well a few hundred meters down on one of the flatter pieces and then just caught a toe on a root and took my first hard fall in a while. Luckily, it was onto pretty nice packed dirt, so I didn’t even break the skin on my hands, just knocked the wind out of me.

This did trigger an emergency alert on my watch which apparently ended my activity and sent a message to my parents who were freaking out for the next half hour until I got back to the car. Oops!

Easy descent and back across the river. A bit warm, so felt great to get in the water on the way back. Nowhere near as hot as Peru though! And the climbs are much shadier.

Overall, fantastic, A+ day. Two big climbs, one record, one just 30” off. Things are coming together right on time!

Total run 26km in 3’00’30, 1752m vert.
