Mount Kaweah Day 1: Approach

We climbed the south face of Mount Florence from the saddle with Peak 11647 which we climbed from the east. Gaining the saddle was not easy, it took us three tries to find a class 2/3 route, which ended up being about 100' south (climbers left) of the massive notch in the ridgeline and face. The rest of the climb was the usual boulder scramble over solid, eroded granite. It was very clear and there was an awesome view in all directions from the summit of Mount Florence. We could see north to the Dardanelles (50 miles), south to the Kaweahs (100 miles), and west to Mount Diablo (150 miles), as well as much of North Yosemite and the Central Sierra to the south. We could also see the smoke plumes of the KNP Complex and Windy Fire, though it appeared they were blowing south today. There was a mid-80s summit register with a few entries by RJ Secor, and a rare Bob Burd backpacking trip. The route back down was easy enough.

At camp we donned our heavy packs and headed up and over Sluggo Pass which was about what I remembered, a steep but not too difficult north side and easy walking on the south. Just south of the pass we saw a herd of Sierra Nevada Bighorn Sheep, the Cathedral Range herd. We found a decent camp just west of Lake 10217 in the beautiful Lyell Fork of the Merced River.
