There is nowhere in the world quite like Katahdin. Hard, slow, beautiful day. Elapsed time of 5:26 tells the real story here. I tried to take it easy on the initial climb up Abol, but was still pretty beat by the time I reached the summit. I took a lengthy break there and watched some thru-hikers finish the AT. The weather on the summit was somehow just as glorious as when I began my thru-hike in 2017. Then off down the Knife Edge, which had one scary move but overall wasn’t nearly as bad as people made it out to be, despite some icy rocks to keep things exciting. However, I badly underestimated the difficulty of the Dudley descent and arrived at Chimney Pond at over 3 hours in pretty rough shape. Had there been a way to bail out from here, I probably would have taken it. There isn’t, of course, so after a bit of sitting at the pond I settled in for a hike up Hamlin Ridge. Thankfully, this was the least technical trail so far. At the summit of Hamlin I ran into Lindsay Klickstein’s dad! After that, I finally found some runnable trail along the Northwest Basin. I took the cutoff on the way back (so not a true double up, but then again the Mansfield double up reaches the summit zero times), and then back down Abol to the car. Felt good enough to hit the lower half of Abol pretty hard, perhaps because it was the first real running I had done all day. All in all a very good weekend.
