This has to be the most optimal place to do this… Kings Canyon Roads End all the way to Onion Valley Trailhead and back today!
On the way out, the route climbs 7,000+ ft to Kearsage Pass before dropping a couple thousands feet down the East Side; I did better than I expected on this long climb, walking very few times and only for short bursts even on some grueling steep sections. After a 45 minute break at the Onion Valley Trailhead (including a heart PB+J), I turned around and headed back! All was going fairly smooth until ~mile 33, where I very suddenly and completely blew up. Something about pounding downhill on a dehydrated, worked stomach, and dropping down into 80-90+ temps did not sit well. I proceeded to absolutely struggle the last 9 miles, stopping often, laying down, getting close to throwing up but never actually getting anything out, etc. I fully dunked myself into the river twice on this stretch (without bothering to take shoes or running vest or anything else off), which felt incredible. 
Had 3 separate bear sightings (including one mother +cub). Set the FKT for this route in the West -> East direction but not the reverse obviously. Met some badass people out on the trail. Also was treated to water and hot dogs by a family BBQ’ing at the end 🙏. Another inspiring day out there!
