***Why this route is special: I have the most vivid childhood memories with this mountain range out the car window to my left, my chin on the window sill, mind floating up to the peaks, taking a break from Highlights Magazine, Sony Walkman on, big sis on the seat to my right, mom riding shotgun, dad with his foot firmly on the gas. These mountains were the sign we’d made it “home.” 

To be strong and healthy enough to run those same mountain passes feels like the gift of a lifetime. 

So I ran them to celebrate the 42nd anniversary of my life. My mom’s birthday gift to me was driving me to the start at 430am. As she drove off with a smile (disguising any of her safety concerns), I said, see you in Mammoth! And then ran all the way home.***

This route was beyond all my wildest imagination. Such wild terrain! Big thanks to Ford Nickels for sharing his route and taking the time to chat about it a few days before! Lost trail for about 1.5 miles going up Hopkins Pass, but stayed calm and used all my offline resources. Smoke from nearby fires rolled in, but by the time I realized it, it was too late to turn back. Brilliant way to celebrate another year of life!
