I had a 60 mile route planned with a couple extra climbs, but it was too cold to get out early enough to do the whole thing, so I shortened it and still got 7 climbs in. First climb was in the park and I got the KOM on the short downhill at the end of the segment. Second climb was the longest of the ride, but also the easiest KOM to get. I backed off a bit in the middle, but the climb finished with a very steep section that would have been hard just walking up. The third climb, Devil's Delight, was the one I was most excited for, since it was steep and on a small, twisting side road. The road was mostly covered in gravel, so my wheel did slip a few times, but I was a good 10 seconds behind the KOM at the end anyway. The fourth climb, up Bluff Rd, was one that I did last year and had previewed yesterday. The first half is quite steep (almost 10%), and then it mellows out to maybe 3% the rest of the way. Strava live told me I was 40 seconds behind the KOM pace at halfway, which I knew had to be off, but I still backed off a bit on the shallower sections, only to see the time gap plummet in the last minute all the way to 5 seconds. I may have been able to get that one with a more consistent effort. At this point I had just tackled 3 climbs in the space of 10 miles, so I recovered with a nice, long downhill and flat until I got to the other side of Bluff Rd. The 5th climb was the steepest and shortest, and perhaps my best effort of the day. I decided to make my 6th climb one that wasn't on the original 60 mile loop. I starred it as I rode towards it, which was supposed to ensure that Strava live would pick it up and show my progress on it. Unfortunately, that didn't happen, so I was flying blind, and I ended up missing the KOM by only a second. My legs were aching pretty bad by this point, and I had only had a couple Clif shot blocks in the last 4 hours, but I wanted to attempt one more climb on Count Rd DI. I knew it well from yesterday, when I posted the 2nd fastest time. I kept pace with the KOM until the last few hundred meters when the road really kicks up. When I went to stand up, my legs just weren't there, and when I fell behind my pace from yesterday, I turned around and rode the last few miles to the bike shop. This was a great ride. I've never tackled so many climbs with such intensity in the same ride before.
