Started out with the typical dark start and cold temps. Matt, Spencer, and Kody went up the road early and put 7.5 minutes into us reeeal quick. Marc and I started to set a steady pace to keep the break under control, but general lack of cohesion kept the gap purdy big. I attacked at the bottom of Strawberry and the group blew up pretty hard. We rolled over the top with 7 guys and we dropped 2 of them over the 2nd climb and finally reeled in Spencer and Matt about 6 miles before the 3rd climb. I launched and John latched right on my wheel. I slowly pulled away from the rest of the group and John and I rolled over the top together. We HAMMERED after the descent because we knew our gap was small and we quickly stretched it out to 3 min. I had to make a quick audible and change the feed zone plan when I found out John was stopping at 138. He took a leak and I waited up and then we railed to Alpine. About 4 miles before Alpine, we rolled through a rough gravel section and I head pisssssst. My sidewall was slashed so I stopped and tried to thumb it to get it to seal but with sealant gushing out I knew I was buggered. I threw a quick CO2 in and started to roll again. About 200m down the road, I was basically running on rim and I rolled real easy into Alpine to get a rear wheel change. John waited up for me and we pulled turns through snake river canyon and the gap quickly went 6.5, 7.5, 9, and finally 10.5 minutes with around 12 miles to go. John and I kept it pretty chill until the final sprint where I put up an embarrassing effort with nothing left in the tank. A little bummed to not get the W, but John is one of the best guys I know so the pain didn't sting quite so much. Hats off to John, you're an absolute beast dude 💪🚀
