Incredible day. The forecast was for isolated storms, and it was looking ominous when I started, so I didn’t know how far I would get. 

Managed to dodge the worst of the storms, and took shelter during one in an old shack at 11k feet. The ever-changing weather made a great photo day even better. I think I took more pics today than any previous ride. 

Since I was carrying a lot of gear (rain, fishing, etc), I figured I had only one segment effort in me, so I made it count. Would love to ride that whole climb sometime with less stuff, but then again I’d have a hard time leaving the fishing gear behind now that I know what’s up there. 

Fished a lake that is an oddity because they stocked lake trout in it, a rare species for 11k feet of elevation. 

I succeeded in catching one, then caught a nice cutthroat in the next lake I fished. I started thinking… I could hit a Colorado grand slam today (4 species of trout in one day). I explored some ponds in hopes of brookies, but alas I was still in cutthroat country. I won’t complain about catching more cutties though! 

If I had hightailed it straight down after catching that second fish, I likely would have completed the grand slam in South Boulder creek, maybe even could have made it a 5 species day. But that’ll have to wait for another day. I spent my time exploring those ponds and enjoying a spectacular sunset on the way down, which was well worth it. 

Even got to see some trains coming through as I got back down to the valley. There was a pro photographer taking pictures of the trains by the road… I didn’t tell him about the shots he could have got if he had gone about a quarter mile up the road I’d just descended 🤠
