One of the most fun races I have run.
Just 1 week after NYC Marathon, I wasn’t sure I wanted to race the weekend after. Nevertheless, ended up registering for this 1/2 marathon the night before the race.
I was coming from a hard workout week, so my idea was to stick to marathon pace and maybe clock a 1:20-22. Fortunately, this morning my legs felt quite good, so I guess the race was on. 

My plan was not to lead nor start with a strong pace (I wasn’t going for a PR, and didn’t know how my legs would feel), but to stay back and maybe push at the end.
The race started with a couple of guys leading at a 3:50-45/km pace, so I just tucked behind them. Up to ~km6, the group was of ~6-7 guys. After the first water stop, I took over the lead and increased maybe 2” the pace. The group started to stretch a bit. Soon after that, one of the runners took over and increased a few more seconds the pace, to about 3:39-40/km pace. He faded a bit short after and I took the lead again. After passing by the U-turn at km11 it was time to come back. Now I knew the route, and it was a bit downhill, so I decided to push a bit more up to ~3:37/km pace. I knew a couple of guys were getting close, but still, there was a lot of race ahead, so it wasn't time to get crazy with the pace. By ~km14 I got caught, so now we were 3 runners at the front. The mental game was on, trying to figure out how much energy everyone had left. We kept the group for ~2km, but eventually, Matthew Barron and the other runner took off. At that point, I started to think about defending that 3rd place, after all, 3rd isn’t bad. Nevertheless, as the race went on, I saw that really none of them took off, we were all keeping the same distances in between. At ~km 18, I had to try, so I increased steadily the pace and was able to move up front to 1st place with ~1-1.5km to finish. Now I just had to embrace the suffering and finish strong. 1:18:16, a 1’16” PR, and most importantly, feeling great for CIM!

Thanks to all volunteers, and congrats to all the runners, and especially to #2nd and #3rd, if it wasn’t for them my race would have been much slower.

🦶 maybe 1/10? I did not feel it during the race too much. Great news!
