Aztec, New Mexico’s Alien Run trails offer some fast, flowy singletrack and rock features to play on. But the most interesting part of the entire ride for me was the experience of riding through the oil fields. The trails run right by and around countless oil wells (not pictured), with exposed pipeline access all over the place. Trucks run up and down the roads to and from the wells every day. But the thing that got me? THE NOISE. It was impossible to escape the background hum of the wells surrounding the trails. 

But how to interpret this? On the one hand, the resource extraction’s impact on the natural beauty of the landscape is dramatic. On the other hand, it’s kind of cool that mountain bike trails can still coexist in such a space. At least, it’s a hell of a lot better than NO mountain bike trails.
